About the Owner - Richard Elroy McCurdy – Health & Safety Professional | Certified Instructor
With over 25 years of experience in occupational health and safety and working within the emergency service as a firefighter on the front lines, I bring a unique blend of technical expertise, frontline experience, and strategic leadership to every role I undertake.
My career began with academic distinction—graduating with honors from Humber College’s Safety Engineering and Technology program in 1988 and receiving the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering’s (CSSE) Academic Achievement Award.
I then launched my professional career as a certified Occupational Health and Safety Professional, working across multiple industry sectors before joining the City of Vaughan’s Health and Safety Department in 1992. There, I led safety program development for Vaughan Hydro, Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS), and Municipal Civic Centre employees. This role sparked a deeper calling, leading me to transition from health and safety advisor into a 25-year career as a full-time professional firefighter within the VFRS.
Health and Safety is the number one priority in the emergency services, so I remained deeply committed to advancing health and safety standards across Ontario’s fire services by serving in key leadership roles, including:
- Labour Co-Chair of the VFRS Joint Health and Safety Committee (12 years)
- Health and Safety Consultant Trainer with the Industrial Accident Prevention Association (now WSPS)
- Provincial Member / Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association (OPFFA) Health and Safety Committee, addressing health and safety concerns of Ontario Fire Department union locals representing over 11,000 full time Ontario career firefighters
- Provincial Appointee / Ontario Fire Service - Ministry of Labour Section 21 Health and Safety Committee, addressing Health and Safety concerns for departments of the Ontario Fire Service
- Board Member / Labour Vice-Chair - Municipal Health and Safety Association (now PSHSA) addressing health and safety concerns for Municipal Employers and their workers
- Fire Department Platoon Instructor - VFRS - Fire department Canadian Red Cross certified platoon instructor
I consider myself lucky and fortunate to have had my initial professional career rooted in occupational health and safety. And then luck and good fortune struck again when I transitioned to a career within the emergency services. Both of these career paths have reinforced to me that EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS & PREVENTION ARE THE KEY.
Today, through McCurdy Consulting Solutions, I am excited to partner with niche businesses to deliver tailored, value-added services to small business owners, healthcare professionals, and the general public.
