About the Owner - Richard Elroy McCurdy – Health & Safety Leader | Retired Firefighter | Consultant
With over 35 years of experience in occupational health and safety and emergency services, I bring a unique blend of technical expertise, frontline experience, and strategic leadership to every role I undertake.
My career began with academic distinction—graduating with honors from Humber College’s Safety Engineering and Technology program in 1988 and receiving the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering’s (CSSE) Academic Achievement Award.
I launched my professional journey as a Certified Health and Safety Professional, working across multiple industry sectors before joining the City of Vaughan’s Health and Safety Department. There, I led program development for Vaughan Hydro, Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS), and Municipal Civic Centre employees. This role sparked a deeper calling, leading me to transition into a 25-year career as a full-time professional firefighter with the VFRS.
Throughout my firefighting career, I remained deeply committed to advancing health and safety standards across Ontario’s fire services. I served in key leadership roles, including:
- Labour Co-Chair of the VFRS Joint Health and Safety Committee (12 years)
- WSIB Advisor for VFRS Union Local 1595 (300 members): Spearheaded a landmark 11-year appeal at the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT) to challenge the denial of compensation benefits for the estate of a firefighter who died of primary brain cancer. Despite initial rejection by WSIB, my efforts—supported by the OPFFA—led to the reversal of this decision, officially recognizing the death as a Line of Duty Death (LODD) and setting a precedent for future occupational disease claims in Ontario’s fire services.
- Consultant Trainer with the Industrial Accident Prevention Association (now WSPS)
- Provincial Member of the 4 person Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association (OPFFA) Health and Safety Committee, representing over 11,000 full time firefighters
- Author of the OPFFA’s first province-wide Health and Safety Alert concerning chemical exposure risks using flashover training containers
- Appointee to the Ontario Ministry of Labour’s Section 21 provincial Fire Service Health and Safety Committee, representing the interests of the OPFFA
- Board Member and Labour Vice-Chair of the Municipal Health and Safety Association (now PSHSA) representing interests of the OPFFA
- Conference Coordinator - OPFFA Annual Health and Safety Education Conference for fire service joint health and safety committees
- OPFFA Research Collaborator with Dr. Brian McCarry, McMaster University - Professor, Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology on groundbreaking firefighter toxic exposure research
- Ontario Dental Association - Annual Spring Meeting (ASM 2019 @ MTCC)
delivered OHSA - Health and Safety Awareness training to ODA conference volunteers
In addition to my operational and advisory roles, I am a certified Emergency Medical Responder, First Aid and BLS/CPR Instructor, equipping others with life-saving skills and knowledge.
